They both die at the end, Adam Silvera: Book review(No spoilers)
What would you do if this is your last day on earth? Many of us have dreamt about how our lives should be in the future, rather than living the present. "They both die at the end" is a bold, lovely, heart-wrenching novel that is beautifully contemplative. Adam Silvera emphasizes the point "there's no life without death, no love without loss", which I feel is very thoughtful. This story is a beautifully written YA novel that embraces a haunting story of loss, hope, and redeeming power of friendship.
Mateo Torez is an 18-year-old boy. His mother died during childbirth and his dad is in a coma. He is a young and thoughtful person who has lived a safe game his whole life. He receives a call one midnight from the Death cast(Death cast is an organization in charge of calling people and informing them that they're going to die sometime in the next 24 hours), this day is going to be his last. He’s put off all his dreams till adulthood, and then the phone call tells him he won’t have adulthood, sending him straight into an existential crisis.
On the other hand, there is Rufus Emeterio a 17-year-old boy. He is a rough and violent person, who also can be gentle and thoughtful when it counts. Whilst beating the hell out of his girlfriend's new boyfriend, He receives a call from the death cast, the same day as Mateo, and turns out he is a decker too. (A decker is someone who has encountered a call from the death cast informing them that they're going to die in the next 24 hours.)
For different reasons, Mateo and Rufus are two very different boys searching for people to give them company on their end day. They come across each other through an app called "Last Friend" which helps find lonely deckers friends to keep them company on their last day.
They become really close friends and even more on their last day together.
They go on one last adventure to live a lifetime in a single day.
My thoughts on this book:
I really loved this book, it wasn't like any other book I've ever read, It was very unique. This was one of the books which emotionally destroyed me. It wasn't hokey, It was very close to reality. I never knew two people could get that close while just knowing each other for one day, This book taught me that time ain't important to fall in love with a person, passion is.
This book had a peculiar tone, neither gloomy nor bright and full of hope. I almost forgot the big spoiler which is the title of this book, as I was so absorbed in their growing friendship and all the adventures they got into, on their very last day. Rather than telling yourself to do the things you love later in life, do it today. You do not know when your last day will come. Don't exist, start living.
Some of my favorite quotes from the book :
“you definitely don’t need the same blood to lose a part of yourself when someone dies.”
"Anyone can have pretty eyes, but only the right kind of person can hum the alphabet and make it your new favorite beat."
“It's mad twisted, but surviving showed me it's better to be alive wishing I was dead than dying wishing I could live forever.”
“Two dudes met. They fell in love. They lived. That's our story.”
"I wasted all those yesterdays and am completely out of tomorrow."
"I kiss the guy who brought me to life on the day we’re going to die."
“No matter how we choose to live, we both die at the end.”
